Carlecotes Hall & Church

Carlecotes Hall, located in the hamlet of Carlecotes near Dunford Bridge in South Yorkshire is one of Yorkshire’s most historic private residences. The earliest records of the house reveal it was a residence as long ago as 1379, belonging to the Riche family for several generations before they moved to nearby Bullhouse Hall in the 1500s.

It is also mentioned in the historic Captain Adam Eyre’s diary in the 1640s when a Francis Haigh is living at Carlecotes Hall. Francis Haigh was married to Martha Wordsworth who was part of the poet William Wordsworth’s family.

Next door to the Hall is St Anne’s Church.  This church is part of the Diocese of Sheffield and is a popular choice for couples who are looking for a beautiful and historic location in which to marry or hold a christening.

There are reports that one of Cromwell’s Generals stayed at Carlecotes Hall during the civil war.

From 1853 to 1971, it was owned by three generations of the Chapman family, who bought it off a man called John Grieve.  John Chapman Built St Anne’s church in 1857 as a private chapel in the grounds of of the hall.

The building was gifted by Isabel Eyton of the Chapman family to the Diocese of Wakefield in 1963 and now falls under the governance of the Diocese of Sheffield.

The Hall is privately owned but has a fascinating history and regular church/Hall open days, such as the Summer Garden Party, which mean that it is occasionally accessible to the public.
